For more than ten years, the Citrus County Historical Society and the Hernando Heritage Council have worked to procure funding for the restoration of the Historic Hernando School.
Built in the early 1940s as a Work Projects Administration (WPA) effort after the Great Recession, the red brick school saw the education of generations of Citrus Countians.
Most recently, it was owned by the Citrus County School District and housed exceptional student education classes for children with special needs.
When the school district vacated the building, it was almost torn down and replaced with a drug store -- until local residents stepped in and persuaded the school district to transfer ownership of the School to the county, making it the only remaining publicly-owned building in Hernando.
Once restored, the Historic Hernando School will provide a cultural center for the community, including classroom space, an auditorium, office space, and a large outdoor area. It will house local history displays, providing educational opportunities for residents and visitors, as well as enrich the cultural offerings of the community.
The final phase of the restoration, for which we are currently pursuing funding from the State of Florida, will put the finishing touches on the building and grounds: floors, paint, trim, ADA compliant entryways, site work, cable and internet wiring, and other small projects necessary for full use of the building.
